Thyroid Health Q & A

What is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland in your neck. It produces essential hormones that regulate your metabolism, which is the mechanism by which you turn fuel from your diet into energy.

If you’re producing too little or too much thyroid hormone, it can cause an imbalance that has a profound effect on your health and quality of life. Left untreated, thyroid health problems can cause life-threatening complications, but with treatment, you can live a long and healthy life.

The two problems that most commonly affect the thyroid are hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is due to a lack of thyroid hormones. If you don’t have enough thyroid hormones in your body, your metabolism slows down, leading to a variety of possible problems, including:

  • Weight gain
  • Inability to lose weight
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Depression
  • Dry hair and skin
  • Hair loss
  • Sleepiness
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Constipation

You may not experience all these symptoms, and because they resemble the symptoms of other conditions, you might not realize you have a thyroid issue at first. Hypothyroidism tends to develop most often in middle age, as does type 2 diabetes and for women, menopause.

The symptoms of these three conditions are all very similar and most likely to appear around the same time in your life. If you have any of these symptoms, you should see Dr. Blaser for some tests.

What is hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism means your thyroid is making too much hormone, overstimulating your metabolism and causing symptoms that include:

  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Unplanned weight loss
  • Palpitations
  • Frequent urination
  • Hand tremors
  • Problems sleeping
  • Thinning skin
  • Fine, brittle hair

Dr. Blaser can diagnose your thyroid health problem by testing the levels of thyroid hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood. With the correct diagnosis, you can recover your health.

How are thyroid health problems treated?

At Blaser Medical, the focus is on treating the cause of your thyroid health problem and not just the symptoms. Dr. Blaser orders a complete thyroid panel to ensure you have an accurate diagnosis and receive the most effective treatment for your condition.

Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are treatable with medication. You might need to have radioactive iodine treatment or take anti-thyroid medication for hyperthyroidism. For hypothyroidism, you can take a replacement thyroid hormone called levothyroxine.

You need to take your medication regularly and follow the instructions carefully for maximum benefit. You also need to visit Dr. Blaser for routine checkups and to have blood tests to check your thyroid levels.
